Gāhāsattasaī - 2
Introduction
Yet another gem from Hāla’s Gāhāsattasaī - (a collection of) seven hundred verses in form of gāthā. It is authored in Māhāraṣṭrī Prākṛta. This verse will make you think - “भगवान् किसी की भी प्रियतमा को ऐसी सखियाँ न दे।”

A beloved, separated from her male counterpart by a voyage and engulfed in intense sadness, learns of his nearing return. After sharing this news with her friends, they counsel her to let go of her pain. “Do not welcome him immediately,” they advise. “Be proud, tease him, and make him feel a sense of need. Only after many attempts to persuade you will you embrace him.
एहिइ सो वि पउत्थो अहं अ कुप्पेज्ज सो वि अणुणेज्ज।
इअ कस्स वि फलइ मणोरहाणँ माला पिअअमम्मि॥१७॥
[एष्यति सोऽपि प्रोषितोऽहं च कोपिष्यामि सोऽप्यनुनेष्यति।
इति कस्या अपि फलति मनोरथानां माला प्रियतमे॥]
Poetic translation:
He’ll return from his wanderlust, my heart a storm,
But whispers of his love will mend the form.
Secret prayers for his return fulfilled,
Two souls entwined, where love is finally stilled.
Literal Translation:
He will return from his journey. I will be angry on him. He will conciliate me. Thus someone’s series of wishes for her beloved bears fruits.
Hindi Translation:
“दूरदेश गया हुआ वह पुनः लौटेगा। मैं उस पर कोप करूंगी और वह मुझे मनायेगा।” इस प्रकार किसी (प्रियतमा) की मनोरथों की माला प्रियतम में फलेग्रहि बन रही है।
सो एहिइ
हालविरइअस्स गाहासत्तसईगंठस्स एसा गाहा। अत्थ कावि पोसिआ नाइआ पणयिणो पोसिआ। सो आगच्छिहिइ इअ तए वत्तं पत्तं। तीए सही तं कहइ - न सो तुमए अभिणंदव्वो। माणं करसु, कुप्पसु, आक्खिवसु, खिण्णा होसु। सो अणुणेहिइ। सो जत्तं करिहिए। तओ तुमं तं अंगीकुणसु।
पणइणीइ पियस्स पवसणं गामजणेहिंतो सुअं। सा खिण्णा। अहदत्ता अज्जा पणइणीए तं च्चिअ भावं पयडइ -
एहिइ सो वि पउत्थो अहं अ कुप्पेज्ज सो वि अणुणेज्ज।
इअ कस्स वि फलइ मणोरहाणँ माला पिअअमम्मि॥१७॥

पउत्थो - बाहिरदेसं गओ सो वि एहइ - आगच्छिहिइ। अहं अ - य कुप्पेज्ज - कुप्पिस्सं। सो वि अणुणेज्ज - अणुणयं करिस्सइ। इअ कस्स वि मणोरहाणाँ - इच्छाणं माला - सिंखला पिअअमम्मि फलइ - फलावंझा होइ।
इअ अलं वित्थरेणं।
