Gāhāsattasaī - 1

Introduction

Hāla’s Gāthāsaptaśatī enjoys prime spot in hearts of scholars as epitome of collection of indepent verses on love. Attributed to Hāla, belonging to 1st century C. E., this text contains verses in Mahārāṣṭrī Prākṛta.Most of the verses are in āryā metre. This work also become a chief inspiration in authorship of Āryāsaptaśatī by Govardhana.

Delaying the departure:

She heard about his departure scheduled the following morning from the people’s mouth. She was in distress. Following verse depicts her unsubduable feeling as already doesn’t wish to see him go.

कल्लं किल खरहिअओ पवसिइहि पियो त्ति सुण्णइ जणम्मि।
तह वड्ढ भअवइ णिसे जह से कल्लं विअ न होइ॥४६

[कल्यं किल खरहृदयः प्रवत्स्यति प्रिय इति श्रूयते जने।
तथा वर्धस्व भगवति निशे यथा तस्य कल्यमेव न भवति॥]

Poetic translation:

In whispers among the people, a tale of my beloved,
Embarks upon the dawn, with a heart unheard;
O Night, divine goddess, extend thy embrace,
Let dawn linger not, in your boundless grace.

Literal Translation:

Among the people, the journey of my callous beloved is spoken of. O Night Goddess, extend yourself such that dawn ceases to arrive.

Hindi Translation:

कठोरहृदयी मेरा प्रियतम कल प्रातः प्रवास करेगा ऐसी बात लोगों में सुनाई पडती है। हे देवी रात्रि! इतनी वृद्धि को प्राप्त करो कि प्रातः हो ही न।


पत्थावणा

हालेणं विरइआ गाहासत्तसई पणअमुत्तगाणं अपुव्वो संगहो। स पढमम्मि सयद्दीए जीवीअ। मरहट्ठीपाइअभासाए अज्जानिबद्धाणं सत्तसयमुत्तगाणं एसो संगहो। गोवद्धणविरइअस्स अज्जसयसईगंठस्स वि पेरणा एसो च्चिअ संगहो।

पवसणविलंबो

पणइणीइ पियस्स पवसणं गामजणेहिंतो सुअं। सा खिण्णा। अहदत्ता अज्जा पणइणीए तं च्चिअ भावं पयडइ -

कल्लं किल खरहिअओ पवसिइहि पियो त्ति सुण्णइ जणम्मि।
तह वड्ढ भअवइ णिसे जह से कल्लं विअ न होइ॥४६

[कल्यं किल खरहृदयः प्रवत्स्यति प्रिय इति श्रूयते जने।
तथा वर्धस्व भगवति निशे यथा तस्य कल्यमेव न भवति॥]

खरहिअओ - तिक्खहिअओ पिओ कल्लं पवसिइहि - पवासं करिहिइ त्ति जणम्मि - लोगम्मि सुण्णइ - सुणिज्जइ। भअवइ निसे तह वड्ढ जहा कल्लं न होइ।

एसो विरहिणीपलावो कइणा इह वण्णिओ। अलं वित्थरेणं।
